Faster, stronger, and ready for tomorrow: Our network infrastructure upgrade

Over the past year and a half, we've been carrying out a major upgrade to our infrastructure — improving the speed, resilience and overall performance of our UK-based network.

The first step was moving our core operations to the newer and better connected Netwise East facility. This work was completed last year, and laid the foundation for our next big project.

Building a stronger backbone

Once we were set up in our new facility, we focused on modernising our core network hardware. This started with a complete overhaul of our switches — upgrading them to support even more high-capacity connections. We moved from our Juniper-based 10Gbit switching fabric to a high-performing 100Gbit infrastructure, powered by Mellanox. This setup provides even more throughput and lower latency across our core services.

Connecting for the future

When our new switch setup was completed in April, we turned our attention to the connections between the data centres that power Krystal's infrastructure across London. Previously, our backbone was on 10 x 10Gbit links, which provided impressive speed and redundancy, but, in the long run, our projected demand was going to outgrow that capacity, and we needed to dream bigger.

We've now consolidated our 10 x 10Gbit links into a more robust configuration of 5 x 100Gbit links. This is a major increase in potential throughput and provides significantly more headroom for future traffic, service expansion and redundancy. We have been quietly deploying these interconnects behind the scenes over the past year, and we have now completed this work.

This upgrade doesn't just increase our overall bandwidth, but it also improves the efficiency, stability and resilience of our network. With these connections, we're able to provide you with powerful connections that are faster, stronger and even more energy efficient.
